Walter Santz, like the most of living people, began listening to music at the early age of 4 or maybe 5 years old, but only started paying real attention to it at the age of 6 because of the strength of Radio in the 80’s and of TV Shows coming from the UK, like Music Box.
Once a relative gave him a little and basic piano keyboard with only one scale, but it has been enough for him to learn how to play music “by ear”, all by himself.
Meanwhile he spent his youth listening to artists and bands like ABBA, The Smiths, Bros, Level 42, Depeche Mode, Rick Astley, Queen, C&C Music Factory, KLF, Technotronic, 2Unlimited and so many others playing different genres and styles.
At the age of 17 his father went to America and brought him a Casio keyboard, still basic, but much more complete than the other one. With this gear he started trying to enhance his skills by playing electronic anthems from the top hits, not an easy task for a self-didactic.
At this time he was clubbing and partying all over Portugal but he didn’t feel the so called (and sudden) “dj awakening”. Instead of it and because of his “ear” to music he was invited to learn how to mix by other friends who were at that time djs on Clubs in Coimbra area. It was the year of 1996 when House Music was coming up on the night scene, at the time his favorite style for clubbing.
Walter Santz doesn’t like to specify the places, clubs or events where he played at, neither the djs he played with. All of that “...played at the most important clubs in here or there...” or “...played with the best international djs like this or that...” is absolutely bull sh*t used by the “wanna-be” djs and his meaningless for him.
The important thing in music is the people, the crowd dancing and, particularly in djing, all the different things that performers can do with music, no matter the style or genre.
